ARTIST'S DESCRIPTION OF PIECE
Ezekiel 18:4
“Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father,
so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth,
it shall die.”

This hand drawn pen and ink image titled “Born Again” is the 2nd description in a Trilogy titled “Afghaniphobia”, which I created in remembrance to the events of 9/11/01. The other two images are “WHY”, which details the incidents involving the Twin Towers in NY and “Sense the Savior” that defines the attack on the Pentagon. The images within this Trilogy are Chapters 20, 21 and 22 of my biography.

I need you as the viewer to understand something. My explanations are often very confusing even to me. Most of the actual images linking “Born Again” to the details of Flight 93 would not be defined until long after this original was completed. By having such a deep connection to this specific event on 9/11 I unknowingly allowed my Power of Intention to take over my thoughts repeatedly. I consciously realized the immediate images that I was drawing but my subconscious was adding the details of future definitions that had not yet come to pass. This is MEAN at it’s finest. To take the present reality, focus on the events that had already happened and then the final answer to the equation is a future result. During the creation of this Trilogy my mind was on overload just as the minds of Flight 93 passengers and crew must have been.

I was so mentally involved with the events of this sunny day on September 11th, 2001. So many thoughts of sadness and confusion and anger yet I also had this sense of pride for my history as an American. This strong sense of pride and belief in the American dream of being free would prove to be a huge influence in the creation of this piece titled “Born Again”.

Given that the passengers of Flight 93 were fully aware of what was going on it gave them a sense of ownership for the situation. They had heard of the attacks on the Towers and the Pentagon thus giving them an opportunity to do something.

Something is what they did.

The famous words uttered by what most consider the main hero of Flight 93. His name is Todd Beamer. The above sphere images contain these famous words, which are marked with a dot and detailed below.

         

         

I also added the main reason to why these words were said and why they were followed ultimately to the death of everyone involved with them.

LOVE. Such a powerful feeling such as this came into the hearts of the last moments of Flight 93. These passengers did what was right, which is why I placed the letters of LOVE in the image on the right.

I now had such strong feelings that linked my heart with those of Flight 93. They saved the lives of who knows how many by preventing another disaster on the ground. This Trilogy is dedicated to all of them. But how am I to describe the events in Shanksville, PA? With “WHY” and “Sense the Savior” I had something tangible, architectural and physical to work with. All that was left in this event was a huge hole in the ground, a massive sadness and a story. I worked with my thoughts for some time on this original. “Born Again” took twice as long to complete as the other 2 Chapters because of my thought process and soul searching. What I realized is that all three chapters needed to share a recognizable common link that would bring them together as One. All 3 flights may have ended in very different locations but they all had commonalities. The main fact is that they were all souls flying on an airliner. So I followed the MEAN and my Bible and again implemented the Sword.

WHY	Born Again

The Sword is the centerpiece of “WHY” and I needed to link each Chapter together. I connected the Chapters by totaling the number of swords used in each piece and using MEAN to define the end result. “WHY” and “Born Again” each have a single sword while “Sense the Savior” has two Swords. The equation sequence using the Fibonacci is below. 0 1 1 2 3 5 8 etc. So now that I had established a definite connection I still needed a linking explanation of this work to the events of Flight 93 and it’s path to the earth in Shanksville, PA. Since the Serpent and the Sword in “WHY” represented the medical symbol for 911, I decided to utilize the Sword in “Born Again” in the same manner. I would create hinting symbols and certain specific characteristics of this Sword to match the physical aspect of this tragedy, which is the airliner itself.

This event was happening on American soil using a U.S. piloted aircraft. Being enlisted in the Air Force for a time I remembered a significant symbol that was used on all kinds of military machinery as well as airplanes. This emblem (figure to the left) is a direct definition of American.

To visually establish the next image I used my classic Black and White checkerboard pattern. This image to the right is designed using 5 oval shapes. I then added arcing lines that divided the image into 8 sections. This image is also defined using MEAN. 0 1 1 2 3 5 8 13 21 etc.

Using this type of oval image also directly relates to the Sword used in “WHY”, which is displayed here on the left. The images are very similar by utilizing the same B & W checkerboard pattern, 5 rings, and also the divided sections. Since “Born Again” is the 2 nd piece in the Trilogy I doubled the number of divided sections from 4 to 8. Also for “Born Again” I now used the oval instead of the common sphere that I had used so often. This decision to change to the Oval is extremely significant to this Trilogy, especially in the next chapter “Sense the Savior”. For now the decisions in this conflict would be made from: The Oval Office

“WHY”

These 2 significant images also share the same Cross shape. This connection from “WHY” to “Born Again” set my thoughts on a pattern of total concentration. I now devoted these thoughts to those who lost their lives on this fateful day.

“Born Again”

Now that I had established the connection between the 2 Chapters I again defined the link using the image here on the right. I have multiple ovals as well as a couple spheres to define the link. Then I created the 5 rings. These rings opened up a whole new avenue of thoughts for this Trilogy. They surround the oval and sphere images adding what looks to me like protection. Now I had the thoughts of a nimbus, which is described as a radiance encircling the head in portrayals of a sacred personage. A Halo.
	I then added my familiar flaming sun into the sword handle as seen here. The center of this sun image was designed to resemble a bloodshot eyeball. The flames are black signifying darkness. You will also notice many dots along the outside of the white oval containing the sun. Flight 93 had the remains identified of 40 crew and passengers that perished in this incident. There are 40 dots within the white oval. This is a direct connection to MEAN. The definition is that I had totally completed this entire drawing before the DNA results had been released indicating the 40 identifications. Also there were actually 44 total passengers and crew on Flight 93. The other 4 are identified as tiny spheres located in the 4 corners of the same image. The arrows show the spheres.
This sun turned out to be the focal point relating to every passenger on Flight 93. My next project was to create the handle of the sword.
The handle for "Born Again" created specific ideas that I would again implement in other aspects of the image. You will notice that I used the sequence of 3 repeatedly as seen in the text box below.

The link is directly related to WHY. To the right is the butt of the sword used in WHY and you see the link to the sequence of 3.
