ARTIST'S DESCRIPTION OF PIECE
2000
Welcome to my first obsession with the wonders of the sphere. This original began the rededication of my relationship with Christ. My life and experiences were so positive during the completion of this work. But it really didn’t start out in a positive way.
I mentioned in Chapter #10, "Calming the Waters", how I had made a rather large mistake within this Chapter #11. In all my previous works I had never made a significant inking error that was unfixable or unable to be “incorporated”. The inking mistake in "Circles Under Christ" was a test to help me understand the fact that I am human and unable to control every aspect of my world.
I started this work by drawing the 9 larger spheres in the center of the piece as seen here.

After completing the checkerboard pattern within these spheres I began to design a type of line work that just didn’t seem to work well for this piece. Then, I accidentally smeared some wet ink in a good portion of this line work. Ink is totally unforgiving. The result looked like (*&^%@#(*&!!! I hadn’t drawn for months until this piece and now I really messed it up. It affected me so much that I completed an entire separate original before I came back to this piece to complete it. Hence, "Calming the Waters", which is the previous Chapter.
Once I calmed down I came back to "Circles Under Christ". Up to this point in this line of drawings I have no unfinished work and no sketches. I was about to get married and my life was moving forward in such a positive way. I had to continue with this piece. I decided that this “mistake” was part of my life and I could just cover it up right? So I inked out the defected area, which is the heavy black portion you see in the above detail image. The line work that I covered with solid ink can only be seen when viewing the original drawing. It’s tough to see, but it’s there so I’ll never forget the mistakes I have made throughout my days as Ron.
My inspiration for this spherical type of imagery came subconsciously from a photo taken with an Electron Microscope. The similarities are obvious to me in this photo on the right. I say subconsciously because "Circles Under Christ" was completed 9 months before I found this photo. It was left over from a Job Fair for local Semi-conductor facilities.
This photo is a picture of a .13micron Hole or Contact that is within the substrate of a silicon wafer. I have been working in the Microelectronics field since 1993 and my art has consistently been defined from memory of the many details within the actual microchips.
This ‘Sphere’ image meant a lot to me at this time, which is probably why I used it in this original. |

Notice the darker colored portion in this photograph where I placed an arrow to indicate the area I’m describing. This is the area that a “defect” may result within the actual microchip construction. The next step for a “Contact” hole is to be filled with a Metal to create a link between two substrates. If the metal doesn’t link the substrates together then there won’t be any electrical contact and the circuit will be defective. Funny how this is the same area that I made my inking mistake or defect.
So I moved on within this original drawing after covering my tracks. Sphere after sphere was added to the piece until I topped the image with a cross.

My minds revolving thoughts of the sphere had now completed. The image of God to me was now clear and explained. I finished this Chapter with the line pattern I had used in many previous works and then filled in the Heavens.
This original drawing set me on the right path again. I was now focused and had a real feeling of responsibility. |
Sarah now played a huge part in my life.
This is defined by the entire main image of this work being the gender symbol of a woman.
Not only was she going to marry me and give me a child, she was in love with me and understood the help I needed to bring us both closer to God. I know this for a fact because the next “12” Chapters that complete my Biography are entirely dedicated to my experiences, family and our walk with Christ. “12” is significant because it is the next Chapter that truly reset my minds path to that of the Holy Spirit. It is also the age that my original path of a Christian life had begun.
