ARTIST'S DESCRIPTION OF PIECE
Here I am a single man in 1998 living in a bedroom at the house of a married couple Allie and Mitch Miller. Friends of mine with such a huge heart to take me in and help me when my life was in a ‘not so good place’. This drawing was being created in their den and I was using a TV tray as a drawing table. Thanks you two. Because of you I’m in a better place.

This piece is actually the second creation of my original pen and ink drawings, but it is the first work that really paid close attention to me and spoke to me with its details. By beginning with “Sweetness” as Chapter #1 my soul was opened widely to all kinds of thoughts and deepness. It was during Chapter #1 that I started to relate the ink to my history. During the creation of this Chapter #2 was when those thoughts were actually being implemented.
I always tried to display the brightness of a happy young man in my early years but inside I felt very dark and without a lot of color. I’ve always felt the presence of GOD throughout my life. Many times I followed those feelings and actually made the connection through prayer, family, and friends. At other times I would ignore these feelings of grace and godliness. Subconsciously, given my close history with the Church, I knew it was up to me to recognize those feelings and relationships, but I chose to place my God in the back seat and drive my own road. By the Grace of God that road wasn’t a dead end.
“GODs Innervention” is the second original drawing but it defines the birth of my entire line of original ink drawings titled Gateways. Using a Sharpie Ultra Fine Point permanent ink pen I began to draw from top to bottom as if reading a book. The ink dried fast and was easy to work with. My early line work is very…fat and really seemed to have no meaning…so I thought.

The definitions for many of the details within my drawings are realized long after the work is completed. I use Source during the creative process and then interpret my works through my ‘Power of Intention’.
In the left example there are 3 aspects that relate to the core of my being. The worm forms under the ‘Earth’. Then I added the Flames and the scribble lines are the air or Wind. Earth, Wind, and Fire. All three would have a great impact on this line of work. |
As I was filling in the representation of Wind using the scribble pattern I added the next defining applications to this entire line.

I drew 3 straight lines and 2 spheres within the representation of wind. The 3 lines where placed in the center of the piece generating from a single source. The numeral 3 is my personal link to MEAN and the Fibonacci Numbering System. Then on each side of these 3 lines I added the 2 Spheres as seen here.

This is the direct link to MEAN as seen in this equation:
0 1 2 3 5 8 13 etc…
0 Mean is the reality link to myself as well as the beginning of this line of work. Chapter #1,“Sweetness”, would be defined as the starting point of my creations with an ink pen, which interprets as the beginning of the my Mean line. “GODs Innervention” is the starting point of relating this ink pen talent to my personal reality not including the thoughts of anyone but myself. I then defined the 2 spheres and then the 3 lines and then…. I’ve now established the base line that I would use in all my drawings. Everything is centered. Everything is linked. I’ve now defined my sickness to positive living as well as my relationship with the Divine Spirit.
By defining the path onto which every detail of my work would be based I then drastically changed my way of thinking. I had to draw a line to break myself from my current reality and to begin re-defining my work Spiritually because throughout my life I’ve had so many issues with FOCUS! I did not want to create a conflict on the definition of how I was to create my work. So the curving line seen here was drawn to divide and change this work from it’s original path to something that became extremely entity connected.

Now that my mental focus had been established and decided, I needed to define the visual context of where my thoughts were going to lead. What do I do? Where do I go from here? I struggled so much on what to draw next. I couldn’t decide on a definite course of action. Then……
Now enters the checkerboard pattern. It was something basic yet defining. I had experimented with it in Chapter #1 a little but this time I felt guided to run with it. . |
|
My concentration was so into the depth of this type of line work that these patterns were creating. Here are some of my favorite examples of how I connected with this depth using this black and white checker pattern in this piece.

I was so excited when the perspective and direction of the checker pattern changed as I adjusted the angles of my lines as seen in this image. The right image is a definite single line angle change, but the image on the left is a more subtle direction change by angling the lines 2 times instead of one.

For some artists this line work is basic knowledge, but for me it was an eye opening experience that would drastically affect my career as an artist. This grid pattern would end up being the basis of my most detailed drawings that would be created years later.
By being so obsessed with this checker pattern I needed to visualize what it might look like when using curved line work instead of the straight edge. I chose to experiment by again implementing the spheres.

These 2 spheres link to the other spheres due to the fact that they are the same in size. To establish this link to Mean, (Mean being the 3 line Pyramid from which came the checker pattern) I connected these new spheres using the checker pattern starting behind the center checkerboard image. The connecting imagery passes into each sphere and then comes out the reverse side. Also the connecting imagery is drawn in the perspective that it is moving away until it enters each sphere. Then when this pattern emerges from the sphere on the backside it is again coming forward as seen here.

This represents the ongoing thoughts I now have relating to this extremely visually pleasing checkerboard pattern. It defines the fact that I will most definitely use it in my next work Chapter #3.
Now I’m finally done with the creating of the defining images for this piece.
“What do I do now with the little amount of space left available on this sheet of paper?” I pray…
The Heavens. I started by drawing about 1000 tiny circles in the open space as stars. I then made a few of those stars Shine. I then filled in around all those circles. Notice that the shining stars are crooked and not straight. Don’t worry, God straightened things out in the next Chapter. |
 |
By adding this Heavens aspect into this work it defines the point that I decided to recognize the World of God in my thoughts and soul. During the weeks that it took to create “GODs Innervention” I was witnessing so many different happenings in my life that related to Gods presence. It was at this point that I began to realize those experiences and notice the effects they were having on my existence.
I found the kindness of the Millers for allowing me to stay, rent-free in their home, so important. I was now saving enough money to get my own apartment. I had paid a few critical bills off during my stay. I was re-attending the Methodist Church in Ridgefield, WA as I did in my high school years. And I met someone, Chapter #5, who would make a drastic impact on my life and help place me on the direction of bringing God out of my back seat.
GOD’s Innervention
Brief description of details
The beginning.
My entire line of ink work sparked from an ink drawing I created in 1996. The drawing was gifted to a special woman in my life at the time. A year after completing this first piece, “Sweetness”, I truly began to draw with an ink pen. Using a Sharpie* Ultra-fine point ink pen I traveled through my thoughts and came up with GOD’s Innervention. I started at the top of the paper and worked my way down.
The beginning of this image is entirely experimentation where I am trying to perfect some curves and line work as well as my connection to the artwork itself. Once I had laid out the checkerboard pattern in the lower portion I stayed with it. The lower circles are a checkerboard pattern as well where I implemented curving lines.
The lower half of “GODs Innervention” contains the stars and heavens. I continue to use this heavenly imagery in most of my work. The difference is that this is the only piece that has stars that shine at different angles. It was this Heavens effect that fine-tuned my thoughts to that of a believer in Christ. In turn I fine-tuned the way I was actually drawing.
He’s always spoken to me…I just now started to listen.

GOD’s Innervention created in 1998.
