ARTIST'S DESCRIPTION OF PIECE
1998
"The Sleigh" is the second drawing of what I define as a practice piece. In a previous Chapter #4, "Eclipse", I defined how a person in my life referred to as "Destiny" demonstrated to me a specific type of line pattern that I really became excited about. "Eclipse" was my first practice piece or sketch that I created to help me develop this new line pattern and to instill the ideas of how I would use it in future original work. More details on ‘Destiny’ are shared in Chapter #5.
Instead of using this pattern in the corner of the drawing as in "Eclipse" I decided to center the image and to not use the 90 ° on the paper as a reference. This aided in the development of using a smaller degree of line measurement instead of the standard 90 °.
There are 2 separate images that incorporate this flowing line pattern. Since this piece was started around Christmas time I decided to give the piece a Holiday theme. The larger line image came to me as if it was floating in space. I thought perhaps a vehicle of sorts with wings and a tail for flight. This is when the title of the work came to mind, ‘The Sleigh’. This would be the ultimate transport for Santa to deliver all his gifts. He could cover so much more earth by traveling in space. Maybe he already does…? |
 |
I decided to reference this Holiday theme by placing an ornament on the lower right corner of the Sleigh image as seen here.
Then I thought to myself that if Santa is on his way to deliver presents to all the worlds children in a space ship then the North Pole could be a planet of it’s own. So I created the North Pole image using the same line pattern to define the link between the two. |

Here is Santa’s planet, North Pole. I even placed the Pole within the image to help as an identification clue. The Pole is seen below.

Then of course the North Pole couldn’t exist without the application of snow. So for my Heavenly stars I enlarged them compared to previous works to give the sense that snow was actually falling.
I then added the other shining stars and planets. This is the first piece that I actually began the creativity of the significance of the shining stars as well as a few more images related to an Eclipse. Examples are below.

By defining "Eclipse" and "The Sleigh" as practice pieces it gave me the confidence to start utilizing my knowledge of this new line pattern. I was also excited about the flaming sphere image. My heart was now starting to burn with the influence of Christ. Flames have always been my enemy and my pain in the past. Now that pain was being released through my work and through this wonderful Christian women known only as "Destiny".
