Afghaniphobia Trilogy #1
Psalms 91:5
“Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day.”
(see description of Afghaniphobia)
ARTIST'S DESCRIPTION OF PIECE
Detailed Definition of Chapter #20
Isaiah 2:4
“And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their
swords
into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.”
This hand drawn pen and ink image titled “WHY” is the 1st description in a Trilogy titled “Afghaniphobia” which I created in remembrance to the events of 9/11/01. The other two images are “Born Again”,
which details the events in Shanksville, PA, and “Sense the Savior” that defines the attack on the Pentagon.
This piece was actually started in August of 2001. I had dreams of designing a piece that would
incorporate a sword. The word of GOD is described as a Sword and my work is based on those words.
I began with the sword. The Serpent came to mind in relation to my 2 previous Chapters 18 and 19, “Boston” and “Flowering Optimism”.
Chapter 18 “Boston”

Chapter 19 “Flowering Optimism”

|
Combining the Sword and the Serpent created the centerpiece for “WHY”.
This centerpiece image was all that I had completed when the events of Sept. 11 th took place. I didn’t start drawing again for a couple weeks. In those 2 weeks I had so many personal thoughts to these events that I decided to dedicate the drawing to those who lost their lives in New York and the World Trade Center collapse. It turns out that this centerpiece image I had already created was a direct link to this event. It’s the medical symbol of the Serpent wrapped around a Staff as well as the symbol for 911, which is the national telephone number for an emergency.
This defining centerpiece image for this work was created and inked weeks before the reality of its direction was revealed on 9/11/2001. |
The next images I added were those of the Twin Towers. I designed the tower images as a before
and after representation.
The before is represented with the Twin Towers on the right. Both towers are still in tact as well as the steeple on the left tower roof. You can see the 1st plane flying in to make the first attack.
 |
Building enlarged in next figure
 |
The lower building in front of the right towers contains the number 127 and the word Vista.
|
These notations are footnotes to define the photograph I referenced to draw this image. The photograph is published in the National Geographic Society volume ‘The Builders- Marvels of Engineering’ 1992.
There is also a reference of 2 birds flying next to one another. |
Now the after is represented using the towers on the left. It’s relatively the same image although about 9 minutes has elapsed detailing the time it took between both planes striking each tower. The tower on the right is already burning from the first attack and the tower on the left is an image just seconds after the other plane had hit.
 |
Notice the broken steeple, which represents the brokenness of the situation. Also notice that there is only a single bird in the sky where there were 2 just moments ago. This defines the instant loss of life. So many souls are now mourning the loss of someone close to them.
The smoke plume is also significant. As you can see the smoke plume drifts from the left tower images to the right tower images. Although each image took place minutes apart, the smoke drifts from one aspect to the other as if no time has elapsed at all. I drifted the plume from the after to the before to define the relationship of “Could we have seen the smoke coming?” After all the clues, data, and evidence gathered of a possible strike on our soil months before this attack, yet we still let it happen. |
There is also an image within the plume of smoke. I enhanced the image below.
 |
If you are able to guess what the image is then you are among the few that have been correct. |
This piece is Chapter #20. To interpret the details of my works I note the scriptures to the King
James Version of the Bible. The KJV needs to be used for accuracy due to the different wording in
other published versions. Both the Chapter and Bible version are listed below.
 |
I placed the number 79 just below the KJV notation to signify the year I received my Bible that I have used for over 20 years to reference all my scriptures. |
There is a planet at the bottom of the piece. Within this planet are many continents. Each of these continents is surrounded by tiny figures of human beings as seen in these examples below.

I placed quite a few human figures in this planet to symbolize the lives of those living inside
Afghanistan. Each set of human figures is joined to different continents in relation to the many tribes in the country that have their own customs and traditions. As you’ll also notice each continent or tribe are holding flags. Each flag for the different tribes has a unique design to define the customs and traditions shared by each individual clan. Some tribes are holding multiple flags.
|
The flags these individual tribes hold are also referenced within the circle of flames around the Twin Towers image. |
|
This circle of flags represents the many tribes that will need to come together and unite for
Afghanistan to rebuild itself and become a successful nation. In the flames they are linked and come together. On the planet they are separated and individual. Well, not entirely. Two of the figures from different tribes are actually holding hands.

There are 2 Heavens in this representation defined by the size change of the shining stars.
Heavens with larger shining stars |
Heavens with smaller shining stars
 |
|
This signifies the Gateway in this image.
The larger detailed stars in the outer Heavens of this piece represent the individual personalities
of those who perished in this incident. In relation to the inner Gateway the souls are still within the
Twin Towers. In the outer Gateway the souls have made the spiritual transition after death and are
now at peace within the Heavens. I defined these personalities by placing different unique designs
at the 4 tips of every star. All 4 points are the same design on each star yet you may notice in
some areas there is a couple of stars with the same type of tip design as shown below.
This links the unity of those particular stars being family. In the above example is the case of a
Father and Son who ran a business together inside the Trade Center. The lower star represents the
son, which is defined by the smaller size of the two.
Other links using these types of stars are described in the definitions for the 3rd piece of this
Trilogy titled “Sense the Savior”.
This chapter, “WHY”, is a defining moment in my life and my drawings. Within weeks of this incident I caused a major rift with my relatives and friends’ as I seriously considered re-enlisting into the Air Force. I was so compelled by what I witnessed this day that I was willing to leave my wife, my 5-month old daughter, my friends, my job, everything.
The only blessing I had for this decision was from my wife, Sarah, who is really the only soul that fully understands my heart, although I was about to break hers.
Needless to say I made it to the recruiters’ office and had a long thoughtful chat with a gung-ho
recruiter. It was decided that if the Air Force absolutely needed a mass enlistment at the time that
they would let me know.
They never called.
